The Pittsburgh Poison Center (PPC) provides emergency poison information and treatment advice to the residents of 44 counties of western and central Pennsylvania and has reduced the morbidity and mortality associated with both unintentional and intentional poison in children, adults and animals to areas served.
Services Provided
The Pittsburgh Poison Center responds to calls about accidental, intentional, environmental and occupational exposures that involve children, adults, senior citizens, and pets.
Research
Staff and faculty conduct clinical and toxicosurveillance research on a variety of toxicology topics.
Outreach
PPC has a long history of proactive involvement with the community and health care professionals. The center is home to "Mr. Yuk," the green-faced icon created in 1971 to keep children away from dangerous household chemicals. The poison control center continues to distribute millions of Mr. Yuk stickers throughout the country each year, along with other poison-education materials for consumers.
