Neal J. Benedict received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2002 from Duquesne University’s Mylan School of Pharmacy in Pittsburgh, Pa. By 2005, Dr. Benedict had completed two residencies accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The first being a Pharmacy Practice residency through Kaleida Health in Buffalo, NY; and the second a Critical Care Specialty residency through the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Benedict currently holds an Assistant Professor title within the Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. He is also a Critical Care Clinical Pharmacist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). At the School of Pharmacy, Dr. Benedict is the primary course coordinator for Advanced Pharmaceutical Care II, which is a two credit course required of students in their third professional year of PharmD school at Pitt. This course provides students with an understanding and appreciation of the challenges of providing pharmaceutical care to critically ill patients, as well as those with acute and chronic kidney disease. In addition to this course, Dr. Benedict holds didactic hours in Pharmacotherapy of Cardiovascular Disease and Profession of Pharmacy. In 2009, Dr. Benedict received the “Cohen Teacher of the Year Award” for exceptional dedication, knowledge, and teaching skills.

At UPMC, Dr. Benedict’s clinical practice sites are the Surgical/Trauma and Medical Intensive Care Units. His primary role in this capacity is to coordinate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to provide optimal pharmaceutical care to critically ill patients. Responsibilities to the hospital include participation in daily workrounds in the ICU, and developing evidence-based practice guidelines/protocols related to drug therapy and disease management in the ICU patient population. In addition, Dr. Benedict serves as a faculty preceptor for Doctor of Pharmacy students in introductory and advanced professional experiential rotations. He has done so for the past 5 years. Dr. Benedict also precepts both 1st and 2nd year residents enrolled in the ASHP accredited University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy Residency Program.

Dr. Benedict has publications in Clinical Therapeutics, Amercian Journal of Health-System Pharmacists and American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. His research interest is in pharmacy education

Dr. Benedict is a School of Pharmacy delegate and member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). He is also a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM).
