Bonnie Falcione earned her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at Duquesne University in 1994. She worked as a staff and consultant pharmacist at UPMC South Side until 1999 when she accepted a position as clinical pharmacist. She returned to Duquesne to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2003 and subsequently accepted an ASHP accredited Critical Care Residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After completing her residency there she decided to combine her new Critical Care skills with her passion for Infectious Diseases. She was the first Infectious Diseases Specialty Resident in the ASHP approved Pharmacy Residency Program at the University of Pittsburgh in the class of 2004-2005. Upon completion of her ID training Dr. Falcione joined the faculty as a specialist in Critical Care with an Appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics in June 2005.
Dr. Falcione's primary clinical practice site is the Trauma/Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian where she works closely with the physicians on the Trauma service and the nurses and other healthcare professionals in the Trauma ICU to optimize medication therapies for patients requiring specialized critical care. She also provides clinical service to the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Antibiotic Management Program. Her research area of interest is optimizing the use of antibiotics to treat nosocomial pneumonia due to resistant organisms, especially vancomycin use in the treatment of pneumonia due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Dr. Falcione enjoys teaching in both the Critical Care and Infectious Diseases courses in the School of Pharmacy. She precepts students during the experiential learning component of the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program as well as Pharmacy Practice and Specialty Residents in the residency program.
Dr. Falcione is a member of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP), the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP).
