Ms. Kowiatek earned her B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1977 and her Master of Public Management in Health Systems from the Carnegie Mellon University, H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management in 1996.  Ms. Kowiatek is a pharmacy manager, leader, and educator in medication safety.  Her years of hospital pharmacy practice experience involve numerous aspects of pharmacy operations management including managing centralized and decentralized pharmacy services and operating room pharmacy satellites.  Ms Kowiatek is a champion of patient medication safety and she has contributed to changes in drug product and practice issues to improve safety for health care consumers.

As assistant professor in the school of pharmacy, she teaches medication safety and regulatory compliance and serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents.  She has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters contributing to the medication safety literature.  As part of interdisciplinary teams, Ms Kowiatek has received national awards, including the Circle of Excellence in Patient Safety Award and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Medication Safety Alert! Cheers Subscriber Award and is also an individual recipient of the ISMP Cheers Award.  Ms. Kowiatek is an inaugural participant of the ISMP's Practitioner in Residence Program and is a member of ISMP Advisory Board for the Nurse Advise-ERR newsletter.  She is an active member of ASHP and is a member of the ASHP Foundation's Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety Selection Panel.  She is currently chair of the ASHP Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners, Section Advisory Group on Medication Safety.
