Susan M. Meyer, Ph.D., is Associate Dean for Education and Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. From 1990 to 2006, Dr. Meyer served as Senior Vice President of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), the national organization representing the interests of pharmacy education and educators. Dr. Meyer received a B.S. in Pharmacy from Ohio Northern University, and received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in pharmacy practice education from Purdue University. From 1987 through 1990, Dr. Meyer served as an assistant professor in pharmacy practice and administration at the College of Pharmacy at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. In 2001, Dr. Meyer was recognized as a Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Distinguished Alumna for significant contributions to the profession of pharmacy.
Her activities in the areas of pharmacy education and academic affairs focus on curricular and institutional quality improvement, instructional design and assessment, faculty development, and interprofessional health professions education. Dr. Meyer managed the development of the Education Scholar scholarly teaching development program for health professions educators, and supervised the development and periodic revision of educational outcomes to guide curriculum development in pharmacy education. Dr. Meyer is a member of the Healthy People Curriculum Task Force, an interprofessional group convened by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) to advance the education of future health care professionals in the areas of clinical prevention and population health. Dr. Meyer also serves as a member of the APTR Board of Directors.
Dr. Meyer is a registered pharmacist in the State of Indiana. She has authored manuscripts on pharmacy education, presented at national and international meetings, spoken to academic audiences at US universities and colleges and schools of pharmacy, and prepared articles for pharmacist continuing professional education. Dr. Meyer is co-author of a chapter on identifying excellence in teaching in Honoring Exemplary Teaching (Svinicki and Menges, eds), published by Jossey-Bass in 1996, and is author of a chapter in Pharmaceutical Care (Knowlton and Penna, eds.) on “Competence for Pharmaceutical Care,” published by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in 2003.
