Dr. Pschirer started his professional career as a staff pharmacist at North Hills Passavant Hospital (now UPMC Passavant) where he was active in developing patient education initiatives.  In 1988 he came to Shadyside Hospital (now UPMC Shadyside) as a clinical pharmacist with a focus in critical care.  After several years he became a clinical supervisor, where he was involved with developing reporting systems for pharmacists' performance management, medication errors and adverse drug events.  Dr. Pschirer developed and implemented the region's first objective performance appraisal system that was nationally reported in 1992, and cited by the JCAHO as a model system for ongoing measurement of performance and competency.  In addition, he established the first integrated reporting policy for medication errors and adverse drug events that now serves as the template for the current UPMC policy.  In 2000 Dr. Pschirer was appointed the Director of Pharmacy Operations at UPMC Shadyside, where he was responsible for developing multi-site automation of pharmacy services, developing outpatient pharmacy services in the Hillman Cancer Center, and assisting in implementing electronic health record initiatives.  From 2003 to 2005 he additionally assumed the responsibility for directing pharmacy operations at UPMC South Side and integrating phamacy services more closely with UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside.  In 2007, he left UPMC Shadyside to assume his current position at the School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Pschirer is a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
