Dr. Pummer received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University in 2004. Upon graduation from Rutgers University, she entered a two year residency program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Her first year of residency was general practice and the second year of residency was specialized in Drug Information. Following completion of her residency program in 2006, she joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, as an Assistant Professor and Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Drug Information.

Dr. Pummer assisted in the coordination of the Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy Drug Information Center merger with the Pittsburgh Poison Center. The DI Center provides accurate and clinically relevant drug information to improve the quality of life of patients and assists physicians and other health care professionals by actively promoting the safe, effective, and evidence-based use of medication. Dr. Pummer is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Drug Information Center and assisting with the expansion of the Center’s services which are currently available to the UPMC, including all member hospitals and affiliated physicians and services, the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, and other local and national health care professionals. Dr. Pummer was involved in the design and implementation of an electronic document management system at the Center. This searchable system enables immediate access to literature both at the Center and remotely. Dr. Pummer’s research interests include the application of technology to improve efficiency as well as patient care in the provision of drug information
services.

Dr. Pummer is an instructor of the Professional Inquiry/Literature Evaluation modules of the Profession of Pharmacy courses and a preceptor for both PharmD students from the University of Pittsburgh and pharmacy residents on clinical rotations in the University of Pittsburgh/UPMC Drug Information Center. Her areas of focus include biomedical literature retrieval and evaluation as well as the development of effective teaching methods.

In 2005, Dr. Pummer received the University of Pennsylvania Health System Quality and Patient Safety Award for her work on the Intensive Ongoing Antiretroviral Medication Adherence Program in the University of Pennsylvania Outpatient HIV Practice. In 2007, Dr. Pummer received the Innovation in Education Award from the Office of the Provost to develop an interactive, web-based literature retrieval tutorial. She also received a data grant from the American Association of Poison Control Centers in 2009 to study the effect of federal pseudoephedrine regulations on methamphetamine exposures reported to poison centers.
