Currently, Dr. Kara Shirley is lead pharmacotherapy specialist. She also holds an appointment as an adjunct faculty member for the University of Pittsburgh, School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Shirley is a 1999 Doctor of Pharmacy Honors graduate of the University of Rhode Island, College of Pharmacy. In 2000, she completed an ASHP accredited residency in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, TX. After her residency, Shirley was a Clinical Fellow in the Neuropsychiatric Sciences at Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy & Center for Clinical Research, Atlanta, GA. Her fellowship research findings were subsequently published in Neuropsychopharmacology and the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology.
From 2002 until July 2007, Dr. Shirley simultaneously held faculty appointments with Albany College of Pharmacy, Albany College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry as well as the Russell Sage Graduate School of Nursing. She has earned board certifications as a psychiatric pharmacist (BCPP 2001) as well as a pharmacotherapy specialist (BCPS 2004) by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties in Washington D.C. Throughout the world approximately 20 doctor of pharmacy professionals hold this dual certification.
Dr. Shirley was recently awarded a “Pharmacists for Change Fellowship” by the Jewish Healthcare Foundation and Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative for her proposal regarding Pharmacist Initiated Falls Prevention in Neuropsychiatric Inpatients. In 2008, she also earned her credentials as a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (CGP) however her clinical passion remains within the field of adolescent psychiatry and addiction.
Since 2004 until the end of her elected term in 2008, Dr. Shirley is the Grand Vice President for Collegiates of Lambda Kappa Sigma International Professional Pharmacy Fraternity, where she mentors chapters throughout the USA, Canada and Japan. She is also professionally involved with the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) as an abstract reviewer, outreach committee member and the membership liaison for Pennsylvania.
Dr. Shirley is a volunteer counselor for the RAINN internet hotline as well as an advocate for the speakers’ bureau “Speaking Out About Rape” (SOAR) through her participation in yearly skydiving fundraisers (http://www.firstgiving.com/squirrely08). When she is not flying through the air or the internet, she spends much of her time underwater as a “scuba diving docent” for the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium.
