Pamela L. Smithburger earned her PharmD from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, she completed an ASHP accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency and then an ASHP accredited Critical Care Specialty Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Upon the completion of her training, Dr. Smithburger joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy as a critical care specialist with an appointment as an Assistant Professor in the department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics.
Dr. Smithburger’s clinical practice site is the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital. She works closely with the physicians on the Pulmonology/Critical Care service, nurses and other healthcare professionals in the Medical Intensive Care Unit ICU to optimize medication therapies for patients requiring specialized care. Dr. Smithburger precepts pharmacy students, during their experiential learning component of the Doctor of Pharmacy Program, as well as Pharmacy Practice and Critical Care Specialty residents in the residency program. She teaches in various courses throughout the PharmD curriculum, primarily focusing on disease states and drug therapy for the critically ill patient population. In regards to her research, Dr. Smithburger is interested in developing ways to better identify and prevent drug-drug interactions in the critically ill population, as well as evaluating and optimizing the use of human simulators in health care education.
