Bio:

Dr. Empey received his PharmD from the University of Rhode Island and completed PGY1 and PGY2 residencies in Pharmacy Practice and Critical Care at the University of Kentucky Hospital. He completed his PhD dissertation work in Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Kentucky in 2007. His translational project, entitled Xenobiotic transporters in lactating mammary epithelial cells: predictions for drug accumulation in breast milk identified drug transport systems that are likely important at the blood/breast milk barrier during lactation and developed a pharmacokinetic model to improve in vitro predictions. Philip has been the recipient of AFPE Predoctoral Fellowships and has participated in both the NIH Training Grant in Reproductive Sciences (T32) and the Clinical Research and Leadership Development Program (K30) at the University of Kentucky.

Research interests of Dr. Empey involve pharmacologic and pathophysiologic alterations in drug disposition. He recently joined the laboratory of Samuel Poloyac, Pharm.D., Ph.D. as a Postdoctoral Associate and is evaluating the expression and functional activity of drug metabolizing enzymes and transporters during traumatic brain injury and cardiac arrest. Studies involving both animal models and clinical samples aimed at identifying the underlying mechanisms and the clinical relevance of alterations in drug disposition are ongoing.
