Christine Ruby-Scelsi, PharmD BCPSAssistant Professor, Pharmacy and Therapeutics
Dr. Christine M. Ruby is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Pharmacy and Therapeutics and Division of Geriatric Medicine, Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine. She is also a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Geriatrics with an active practice at the Senior Care Institute, a hospital-based ambulatory clinic located at UPMC-Shadyside.
Dr. Ruby completed her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (1990) and Doctor of Pharmacy (1994) degrees at the University of Pittsburgh. She completed an ASHP accredited Specialty Residency in Geriatric Pharmacy Practice at the Durham VA Medical Center in North Carolina. She also completed a two year research fellowship in Geriatric Pharmacotherapy at the Center for the Study of Aging at Duke University. After her training, Dr. Ruby accepted faculty positions at Duke and the University of North Carolina. She also was Director of the Geriatric Pharmacy Residency program at the Durham VA for nearly a decade before returning to her alma mater in 2005.
Dr. Ruby’s research interests focus on appropriate medication use in older adults and geriatric syndromes such as urinary incontinence, cognitive changes, and mobility/falls. She serves as co-director for the Geriatric Pharmacy Fellowship program, co-sponsored by the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy. She is also the Director for the PGY2 Geriatric Pharmacy Residency Program.
Dr. Ruby is currently co-coordinates the Neurology-Psychiatry module, a 4 credit course offered in the second semester of the third year of the PharmD curriculum. Dr. Ruby is also a course contributor for several other courses in the PharmD curriculum such as Professions of Pharmacy 2 and 3, Drug Development 2, Endocrine module, and Immunizations.
Dr. Ruby is a Fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and during her career has trained more than 18 geriatric specialty residents, numerous pharmacy practice residents, pharmacy and medical students. Dr. Ruby was named the 2009 Faculty Preceptor of the Year and in 2012 received the Leadership in Education award from the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. In addition, Dr. Ruby has authored numerous research papers, review articles and book chapters.
