Pamela L. Smithburger, PharmD, MS, BCPS earned her PharmD from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, she completed an ASHP accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency and then an ASHP accredited Critical Care Specialty Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Dr. Smithburger has also completed the Master of Science Program in Clinical Research from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Smithburger’s clinical practice site is the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital. She works closely with the physicians on the Pulmonology/Critical Care service, nurses and other healthcare professionals to optimize medication therapies for patients requiring specialized care. Dr. Smithburger precepts pharmacy students, during their experiential learning component of the Doctor of Pharmacy Program, as well as Pharmacy Practice and Critical Care Specialty residents in the UPMC residency program. She is the program director for the Critical Care Residency. She teaches in various courses throughout the PharmD curriculum, primarily focusing on disease states and drug therapy for the critically ill patient population. In regards to her research, Dr. Smithburger's focus is patient safety in the ICU as well as sedation and delirium management.
