Funding Opportunities

Applying for grants and awards is an integral part of academic research. All students in the Ph.D. program are expected to apply for competitive fellowships, scholarships, and merit awards. Examples of recent awards as well as links to information about specific funding opportunities is provided:

Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Student Excellence Award

The School of Pharmacy offers the Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Student Excellence Award in recognition of outstanding achievements in the areas of academic performance and research while a graduate student in the Doctor of Philosophy program. The minimum criteria for receiving the award include:

Note: Submission of a competitive research application is highly encouraged and will be given weight along with other factors.

The award includes a certificate and a $2,000 educational allowance.  Nominations for the award are solicited in early February.

Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Award

The Teaching Assistant Award recognizes one PhD student each year for outstanding service as a Teaching Assistant. The recipient is selected by the graduate program Academic Affairs committee, and is based on written feedback from course coordinators using the TA evaluation process currently in place. The award consists of a certificate, and an educational allowance of $500.

GPC Travel Awards

The Graduate Program Council (GPC) has established a process by which students in the PhD Program can apply for travel awards to attend scientific meetings and conferences. Any student enrolled in the PhD program may apply. A limited number of awards are available. For specific details consult the ‘Guidelines for GPC Travel Awards’. To apply for an award, download the 'Travel Award Request Form' and follow the instructions on the Form.

American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE)

The AFPE offers a variety of scholarships and fellowships for students enrolled in a doctor of philosophy program in pharmaceutical sciences. The awards are designed to encourage outstanding pre-doctoral students to continue their studies and earn a PhD in the pharmaceutical sciences at a U.S. school or college of pharmacy.

Wal-Mart Annual Conference Scholarship Program

AACP has announced the third year of the Wal-Mart Annual Conference Scholarship Program. This program will provide $1,000 travel scholarships to fifty-sixty (50-60) student-faculty pairs from AACP member institutions to attend the AACP Annual Meeting and the AACP Teachers Seminar in Orlando, Florida from July 14-18, 2007. The scholarship is intended to be used for Annual Meeting and Teachers Seminar registration for the student (100% of early student registration) and the faculty member (50% of early registration). Beyond registration, the applicants can choose to apply the remainder of the scholarship to airfare, lodging, and other meeting expenses for the student. National Institutes of Health Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award

The National Institutes of Health offer competitive training fellowships to outstanding students enrolled in a doctoral program and engaged in specific areas of research.  Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.

AAPS offers competitive student travel awards for pre doctoral students to present ongoing research at it’s national meeting. Applications must be received by October.

Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) Travel Awards

The University of Pittsburgh Graduate and Professional Student Association provides travel grants for students to present at national conferences.  For information about GPSA see www.pittgpsa.org

The PhRMA Foundation (Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America)

The PhRMA Foundation provides pre doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships for students engaged in research and training in pharmaceutical sciences.  For information about the PhRMA Foundation see www.phrmafoundation.org.

American Heart Association

The American Heart Association provides pre doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships To help students initiate careers in cardiovascular or stroke research. AACR-WICR Brigid G. Leventhal Scholar in Cancer Research Award

Travel award for AACR-WICR members who are scientists-in-training and presenters of meritorious scientific papers at AACR Annual Meetings and Special Conferences. Deadline for application is in December. For more information see http://www.aacr.org/default.aspx?p=6744

Nobel Laureate Signature Award for Graduate Education in Chemistry Sponsored by Mallinckrodt Baker Inc.

Recognize an outstanding graduate student and his or her preceptor(s), in the field of chemistry. The graduate student will receive $3,000 and a plaque containing the signatures of Nobel Laureates. The student's preceptor(s) will receive $3,000 and a plaque for permanent display in the institution's Chemistry Department. Reasonable travel expenses to the meeting at which the award will be presented will be reimbursed by the sponsor. Deadline for nomination is November 1. Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research Program

Awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering for the purpose of providing students with enhanced educational experiences. Submission deadlines are March 15 and October 15. For more information see http://www.sigmaxi.org/programs/giar/index.shtml.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory Advanced Short-Term Research Opportunity and Oak Ridge National Laboratory Postmaster's Research Participation Program

Provide short-term support for research in areas that support ORNL missions in the basic and applied sciences, energy, and the environment. Must have received masters degree within last 5 years. For more information see http://see.orau.org/Listing.aspx?Type=RecentStudent .

Sigma Delta Epsilon/Graduate Women in Science

Fellowships ranging from $1000 - $4000. The major component of the research can be either applied or basic. Applicant must be enrolled as a graduate student, or engaged in post-doctoral or early-stage junior faculty academic research, and demonstrate financial need for continuation or completion of their research. Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation

Postdoctoral fellowships and grants awarded for two years at $40,000 per year for a total of $80,000. For more information see http://www.preventcancer.org/research/index.cfm.

Sturge-Weber Foundation

AFAR Richard E. Shepherd Award

ASHP Foundation Student Research Award

Presented annually to a pharmacy student for a published or an unpublished paper or report of a completed research project related to pharmacy practice in a hospitals and health systems. Award consists of a $1500 honorarium, a $1,000 expense allowance to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, and a plaque. The research should be completed and the paper prepared before June 1 of the year preceding the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting at which the Award is to be presented.
