Our Community Residency Program is focused on developing leaders in pharmacist practice development. We seek to expose our residents to contemporary issues related to building opportunities for pharmacists to provide care in our communities. Since the establishment of our residency in 2006, our residents have played key roles in developing practices, advancing research through publication, and enhancing our curriculum. Our residency seeks to exposure residents to many aspects of community and ambulatory care. Residents have a primary community pharmacy practice site at either a Rite Aid Pharmacy or Giant Eagle Pharmacy where comprehensive medication therapy management, diabetes education and immunizations are provided. The residents also have a longitudinal experience in a family practice residency program, an underserved physician practice and an experience at two local health plans. Residents conduct a research project which has direct implications to their practice site and beyond – including opportunities for grant and manuscript publication. Residents are responsible for educating our students through small group discussion sessions, didactic lectures, and precepting during experiential learning rotations and experiences.
Residents come to the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy programs from far and wide, representing more than 25 US States and foreign countries. All residents must be eligible for pharmacist licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Applications for Pharmacist License and Intern Registration are available.
Pennsylvania requires 1500 registered intern hours in order to be eligible for licensure. Of the 1500 hours, only 750 hours can be obtained through an academic program. That is, 750 intern hours must be obtained outside of school. These 750 intern hours must be registered with a state board of pharmacy to count toward licensure in Pennsylvania. If you have not yet started registering hours with your state board of pharmacy, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible in order to be eligible for Pennsylvania licensure. We also encourage you to review your own state's rules regarding the registration, reporting and transfer of intern hours. Please do not hesitate to discuss any questions you have regarding licensure with individual program directors.
Eligible candidates will have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy and must submit the standard application requirements via PhORCAS by December 31st. Three letters of recommendation (at least one letter from a clinical rotation experience) are required. An on-site interview is required.
