Clinical Management

Preceptor: Bryan Yourich, PharmD

The clinical management rotation is designed to expose the resident to a broad number of topics concerning the management of pharmacy services.  The resident will be involved with the daily oversight and management of decentralized clinical services, operating room pharmacy services, and an ambulatory anticoagulation clinic.  The resident will work closely with the preceptor to provide direction and guidance to pharmacy staff.  Daily activities include but are not limited to assessing workflow, monitoring employee performance, coaching and motivating staff, tracking service metrics, and problem analysis and resolution.  The resident can expect to be exposed to the following topics while on rotation:  leadership styles, succession planning, change management, communication styles/tools, coaching staff and time management skills.

The objectives of the rotation are as follows:

  1. Goal: Identify opportunities for improvement of the organization’s medication-use system.
  2. Goal: Exhibit essential personal skills of a practice leader.
  3. Goal: Contribute to departmental leadership and management activities.
  4. Goal: Exercise practice leadership.
  5. Goal: Conduct practice-related investigations using effective project management skills.
  6. Goal: Provide effective medication and practice-related education, training, or counseling to patients, caregivers, health care professionals, and the public.
  7. Goal: Use information technology to make decisions and reduce error.
  8. Goal: Contribute to the development of a new pharmacy service or to the enhancement of an existing service.
  9. Goal: Understand the principles of a systematic approach to staff development in pharmacy practice. 
  10. Goal: Resolve conflicts through negotiation.
  11. Goal: Understand the process of managing the practice area's human resources.
  12. Goal: Understand the process of establishing a pharmacy residency program.
  13. Goal: Maintain confidentiality of patient and proprietary business information.
  14. Goal: Design and deliver programs that contribute to public health efforts.
  15. Goal: Use approaches in all communications that display sensitivity to the cultural and personal characteristics of patients, caregivers, and health care colleagues.
  16. Goal: Communicate effectively.
  17. Goal: Balance obligations to oneself, relationships, and work in a way that minimizes stress.
  18. Goal: Manage time effectively to fulfill practice responsibilities.
  19. Goal: Make effective use of available software and information systems.
