Corporate Pharmacy Administration Rotation

Preceptor: Robert Weber, Executive Director of Pharmacy

The goals of the Corporate Pharmacy Administration rotation are to give the resident a thorough understanding of the operational aspects of the UPMC Health System and the role of the Executive Director within the Health System.  The resident will learn the strategies involved in coordinating academic issues and pharmacy operations within the Health System and the role of the Pharmacy Director as part of these services.   The resident will learn the roles of key Department Directors, Administrators, Vice Presidents and Medical Directors within a Health System and how each relates to the care of patients and potential synergies with the Pharmacy Services.  The resident will be expected to actively participate in the decision making processes at the corporate level and gain an understanding of how resources are managed across multiple departments.           

The objectives of the rotation are as follows:

  1. Understand the integration of UPMC pharmacy services with the School of Pharmacy
  2. Understand the role that risk-taking plays in effective leadership
  3. Present oneself as an assertive pharmacy leader
  4. Use effective negotiating skills
  5. Appreciate the need to account for diversity when planning, marketing, and implementing pharmacy programs and services
  6. Understand the network of individuals and organizations with whom the pharmacy leader must interact in order to achieve the pharmacy's mission
  7. Maintain a current understanding of national, regional, and local health care policy
  8. Assess the quality of pharmacy operations
  9. Create a vision for the pharmacy
  10. Understand effective strategies for assuring the adoption of the pharmacy vision
  11. Evaluate organizational structure for effectiveness in achieving the pharmacy mission
  12. Participate in the creation of effective strategies to market the value of pharmacists.
  13. Participate in the creation of effective strategies to market pharmacy plans and programs
  14. Assess the quality of pharmacy operations
