Purchasing and Distribution Rotation

The Purchasing and Distribution rotation is designed to provide the resident with a thorough understanding of health system pharmacy purchasing and contract management. Residents will be given the opportunity to participate in contract negotiations with vendors and department of pharmacy administrators. An understanding of negotiation tactics, contract language and contract performance will be key skills residents will gain during this rotation.
The objectives of the rotation are as follows:
- Understand the process of negotiating and implementing contracts with vendors.
- Explain the process of negotiating contracts with vendors.
- Explain the purpose of contracting.
- State the types of contracts possible with vendors.
- State the types of contracts possible with vendors.
- Identify the implications for the company and customer of a particular contract.
- Explain reporting requirements to evaluate contract performance.
- Explain strategies to assure contract performance.
- Explain the process for developing and maintaining a pharmacy distribution network for a pharmaceutical product including customization to meet a customer's needs.
