Pharmacy Operations Rotation I

The intent of this rotation is to serve as an introduction to pharmacy operations.  The resident will learn about leadership styles, effectiveness and risk-taking.  Included in this rotation will be a comprehensive overview of personnel management which will include disciplinary actions, conflict resolution, performance evaluation, staff motivation, delegation and empowerment.  Key labor regulations will be covered including the Fair Labor Standards Act, the ADEA, the ADA, FMLA, NLRA, along with the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures.  General pharmacy governance will be covered including span of control, span of influence, span of accountability and span of support.  Operational efficiency experiences will include appropriate scheduling, customer service, operational metrics, and employee-workload matching.   The use of effective negotiation skills will also be covered along with the difference between leadership and management.  An overview of regulatory bodies including the JCAHO and the Department of Health will also be provided.

The objectives of the rotation are as follows:

  1. Understand the role that risk-taking plays in effective leadership
  2. Present oneself as an assertive pharmacy leader.
  3. Use conflict management skills to resolve disputes.
  4. Use effective negotiating skills.
  5. Appreciate the need to account for diversity when planning, marketing, and implementing pharmacy programs and services.
  6. Use effective techniques to motivate staff to achieve the pharmacy's mission.
  7. Understand the role of span of control in achieving the pharmacy's mission.
  8. Understand the role of empowerment and delegation in achieving the pharmacy's mission.
  9. Utilize systems thinking to plan and execute pharmacy operations.
  10. Use an organized system for staying current with pertinent management and leadership literature.
  11. Create a vision for the pharmacy.
  12. Understand effective strategies for assuring the adoption of the pharmacy vision.
  13. Evaluate organizational structure for effectiveness in achieving the pharmacy mission.
  14. Develop staff development plans.
  15. Participate in the creation of effective strategies to market the value of pharmacists.
  16. Participate in the creation of effective strategies to market pharmacy plans and programs.
  17. Participate in the implementation of a marketing program.
  18. Assess the quality of pharmacy operations.
