Advanced Operations Management Rotation
Preceptor: Scott Mark, Director of Pharmacy
The intent of this rotation is to serve as a continuation of the Operations I Rotation. Key elements of focus will be the setting of a Departmental vision and direction. Included in this will be instructions on team building, team dynamics and balance as well as the need to account for diversity. Team alignment with the Departmental mission and the need for a systems view will be stressed. The resident will also gain a better understanding of organizational structure and the ability to influence people outside the reporting structure. This will include a discussion on the role of pharmacy in the health-system and academic environments and the corresponding missions. On this rotation, operational challenges are expanded to include ambulatory and retail integrations. The resident will learn how to develop a comprehensive Departmental marketing strategy which focuses on the value of pharmacy and the contributions that are made to patient care. An overview of quality, competency and proficiency and development will be provided. This will include a discussion on succession planning, departmental goal setting and prioritization.
The objectives of the rotation are as follows:
- Understand the role that risk-taking plays in effective leadership
- Present oneself as an assertive pharmacy leader.
- Use conflict management skills to resolve disputes.
- Use effective negotiating skills.
- Appreciate the need to account for diversity when planning, marketing, and implementing pharmacy programs and services.
- Use effective techniques to motivate staff to achieve the pharmacy's mission.
- Understand the role of span of control in achieving the pharmacy's mission.
- Understand the role of empowerment and delegation in achieving the pharmacy's mission.
- Utilize systems thinking to plan and execute pharmacy operations.
- Use an organized system for staying current with pertinent management and leadership literature.
- Create a vision for the pharmacy.
- Understand effective strategies for assuring the adoption of the pharmacy vision.
- Evaluate organizational structure for effectiveness in achieving the pharmacy mission.
- Develop staff development plans.
- Participate in the creation of effective strategies to market the value of pharmacists.
- Participate in the creation of effective strategies to market pharmacy plans and programs.
- Participate in the implementation of a marketing program.
- Assess the quality of pharmacy operations.
- Develop facilities plans.
