Program Purpose
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Our residents will become confident, effective practitioners of pharmacotherapy. Residents will focus on ensuring application of safe, effective and evidence-based medicine practices to individual patients and in populations across the health system. These practitioners will demonstrate competency in educating their patients as well as present and future health care professionals. Additional areas of concentration will include enhancing communication skills, professionalism and applying project management skills to practice-based scholarly activities.

A variety of learning experiences
Shadyside residents will develop clinical skills in a variety of settings, with a high degree of rotation flexibility for personalization. Unique learning opportunities at UPMC Shadyside include 6-month longitudinal elective experiences in antimicrobial stewardship or ambulatory care family medicine, a wide variety of on-site block electives including Emergency Medicine and Oncology, as well as access to learning experiences throughout the larger UPMC system.
Additionally, our unique longitudinal learning experience for research and hospital operations provides additional structure and customized attention from experienced mentors. In addition to these required longitudinal rotations residents may elect to participate in the Mastery of Teaching program at the University of Pittsburgh.
