Program Purpose
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Mission
To provide personalized training that will prepare graduates of the program to practice across all care settings, including acute inpatient, ambulatory, as well as academia. Training will focus on providing patient-centered care as part of an interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective, and evidence-based pharmacotherapy for individuals with medical and psychiatric disorders. Upon successful completion of the residency program, graduates will be prepared to continue post-graduate training or to pursue a rewarding career in clinical pharmacy.

Obtain the rating of “achieved for residency” for ≥90% of the residency objectives associated with the five educational outcomes set for this residency program
-
For Competency Area R1: Patient Care, the resident must have a rating of “achieved for residency” for 100% of objectives
-
Any objectives that do not receive a rating of “Achieved” must receive a rating of “Satisfactory Progress”; no remaining objectives may have a rating of “Needs Improvement” at the end of the residency program

Satisfactory completion of all learning experiences as determined by the individual preceptors in conjunction with the RPD. If a learning experience is not completed in a satisfactory manner, additional remedial work and/or learning experience extension will be granted as determined by the preceptor and RPD

Completion of major pharmacy resident research.

Presentation of research at University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy Resident Research Day

Successful completion of one Pharmacotherapy Updates presentations (PULSE), two journal clubs, and two formal case presentations
-
Completion of Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee responsibilities (i.e. ADR/labeling changes, newsletter, and meeting minutes)

Involvement in one medication use evaluation (MUE) project
-
Submission of a manuscript draft of the major pharmacy project with review by the residency program director.

Completion of all assignments and projects as defined by the preceptors and the RPD

Compliance with all institutional and departmental policies
