Student Society of Cannabis Pharmacists (SCCP)

Why Cannabis?

As of 2019, 1 in 9 adults in the US consume cannabis at least once per year. It’s legalized in 33 states for a breadth of medical conditions and as healthcare providers, patients expect us to have a deeper understanding about its uses, product forms, and drug interactions.

Background

The term “marijuana” was coined and publicized in America in the early 20th century in an effort to appeal to anti-immigrant sentiments. Racist sentiments around the term “cannabis” are still used today. The term “marijuana” is the vernacular in academia and medicine. SSCP recognizes the racial disparities that have arisen from inequitable drug policy. We advocate for regulatory reform while working to center patients and providers who have been historically marginalized by cannabis law.

Our Mission

SCCP seeks to deepen our understanding of the endocannabinoid system and the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids by looking at the interacting components of the cannabis plant.

In addition, there is a widespread stigma surrounding the plant and numerous barriers to gaining knowledge. SSCP aims to reduce this stigma by acting as a resource for cannabis users, prescribers, and dispensers.

Benefits

  • Discover the largest receptor system in our bodies, the endocannabinoid system.
  • We offer reliable instructional materials for inquiring patients and healthcare providers alike.
  • Exclusive access to guest speakers directly involved in this discussion.
  • Members learn the information necessary to design and implement proper treatment involving cannabis.

Membership

Membership is open to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. Uniquely, SSCP is also open to undergraduate students of the Univeristy of Pittsburgh whose interest lies in the cannabis industry.
