Elizabeth Garcia (PharmD 2018)

Elizabeth A. Garcia (she/her/hers) recently completed the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) applied epidemiology fellowship program, where she was assigned to the Pennsylvania Department of Health within the Bureau of Epidemiology.  EIS officers are CDC’s disease detectives.  As an EIS officer in Pennsylvania, she led outbreak investigations of emerging pathogens including Elizabethkingia anophelis, educated providers about measles identification and prevention, and conducted emergency response and preparedness activities including highly pathogenic avian influenza response and tabletop exercises.  She also conducted epidemiologic analyses on HIV and hepatitis C coinfection and on the effect of environmental factors on influenza transmission among Pennsylvania residents.

Previously, she worked with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in various roles, including mpox emergency response, respiratory protection programs for long term care facilities, and HIV clinical outreach education.  She developed an immediate initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) public health detailing initiative, initiated a long-acting injectable ART provider education program, and facilitated trainings on benefits navigation for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

As a consultant with Pharmacy Consulting International, she was the project manager for a health system ambulatory pharmacy initiative that involved building five pharmacies and establishing a specialty pharmacy.  She also evaluated pharmacy claims data to identify potential savings and implemented drug utilization strategies through face-to-face prescriber education.  She has completed research in biomedical informatics, developing medication reconciliation use cases and user stories for a task force creating a minimum information model for potential drug-drug interactions.

Elizabeth graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy.  Her interests include expanding the role of pharmacists in public health, provider education, applied epidemiology, emergency preparedness and response, and public health informatics.  She is currently taking a sabbatical to travel with her family
