Sravan Patel, PhD is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and an investigator at Magee-Womens Research Institute, with expertise in drug delivery, translational product development, and women’s health. He holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from BITS Pilani, India, an MS degree from the University of Georgia, Athens and a PhD from Duquesne University. Dr. Patel’s Postdoctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh & MWRI was focused on developing and translating pharmaceutical products for women’s health, as well as devising regulatory-compliant methods for testing product performance in collaboration with US FDA. Over the past decade, his research has been focused on addressing critical women’s health issues, including HIV and STI prevention, contraception, and endometriosis, through innovative drug delivery strategies. His overarching goal is to develop affordable, translatable, and patient-centric drug delivery solutions that address complex health challenges, and train the next generation leaders in health sciences. Dr. Patel’s research has been supported by government, Gates Foundation, industry-sponsored, and intramural grants. Dr. Patel routinely publishes scholarly work in international peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, national and international presentations, and patent applications. He is also actively engaged in professional service, acting as a USP delegate for the School of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh and vice-chair of the AAPS Global Health Community.

Research Interests

Dr. Patel's current primary research focus is in women's health. He is working on the development and scale up of acceptable and affordable pharmaceutical products for prevention of unintended pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections including HIV and herpes. He is also conducting research on developing diagnostic and treatment strategies for endometriosis. Additionally, Dr. Patel has significant interest in utilizing manufacturing methods such as hot-melt extrusion and 3D printing for developing scalable and innovative dosage forms.
