The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy offers a 2-year fellowship designed to develop leaders in community pharmacy practice innovation. Fellows will gain expertise on the implementation and evaluation of enhanced community pharmacy practice models through partnerships with independent community pharmacies, a community pharmacy enhanced services network, and a University-based vaccination and wellness center.
The fellow will be a key member of the Community Leadership and Innovation in Practice Center and contribute to the School’s community-based research, innovation, education and practice initiatives. The Center is dedicated to advancing the way pharmacy is practiced in communities regionally and across the nation.
Core Learning
The core learning experiences of the fellowship program consist of mentored pharmacy practice development and research (approximately 80% of the fellow’s effort), with the remaining time devoted to teaching, leadership activities, professional service, and community-based direct patient care. The fellow may choose to enroll in the School’s teaching certificate program. Specific activities are individualized to meet the fellow’s interests and career goals. The program co-directors and a committee consisting of community practice leaders and faculty members with expertise in community pharmacy practice and health services/health outcomes research advise the fellow. The fellow meets weekly with the program director and every 6 months with the full committee.
Fellows will:
- Engage in the development and evaluation of innovative community pharmacy practice development initiatives. Emphasis will be placed on gaining skills in implementation science and outcomes analyses.
- Authoring and submitting at least one grant application for funding consideration.
- Present at regional and national pharmacy conferences.
- Submit at least one manuscript for publication.
- Gain teaching experience in a variety of settings, design course materials and evaluate student learners.
- Develop and communicate a vision for the future of community pharmacy practice.
- Be mentored by leaders in community pharmacy practice and experts in implementation science and health outcomes research.

- Pennsylvania Pharmacist Care Network/CPESN: over 200 pharmacies in Pennsylvania, and a partnership with CPESN USA nationwide

Eligibility
Applicants should possess a PharmD degree. Preference is given to those who have completed a PGY1 community-based pharmacy residency or have experience in community pharmacy practice. Applicants should be eligible for pharmacist licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
